November 13, 1950 – July 20, 2015
After a nearly six year valiant fight against an incurable cancer, David passed peacefully with family and friends at his side in Melbourne Australia on July 20th. He is survived by his wife, Pauline (Melbourne), son Matthew and granddaughters Riley and Zoe of Chicago, son Benjamin (Melbourne), parents Don and Mary White, siblings Janet Method, Karen (Gary) Delgado-Ryan, Mark (Mary) White, Diane White, Elaine (Mike) Ford, Judy White, all of central Indiana, and Ann (Bill) Hannant of Sebastopol, CA, as well as 26 nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Following his graduation from Scecina High School and Marian College of Indianapolis, David accepted a “temporary” teaching assignment in 1975 at Parkdale High School in Melbourne Australia, and retired from there 30 years later. He taught English literature to over 1500 students as well as coached track, golf, and drama, and eventually headed up the English department for several years. For the past 10 years in his “retirement”, he managed the Australian country-wide semi-annual essay markings of two million students per year, and also made presentations to both students and teachers around the province.
David loved the people and easy-going way of life in Australia, but he especially adored his beloved Pauline, a native of Melbourne, his partner of nearly 30 years, and the wonderful times they enjoyed with close friends and neighbors. He was an avid golfer, runner, cyclist, and frequently returned to visit all his family and friends in the states.
On Saturday, August 15, friends are invited to join David’s family in celebrating his life and viewing a video of his funeral service conducted July 23rd by W.D. Rose Funerals in Melbourne. The celebration will be held in the auditorium (room 102) at Bishop Chatard High School, 5885 Crittenden Avenue, Indianapolis, at 2:45 p.m. An off-site social and refreshments will follow at 4:30 p.m. Friends may leave online condolences at www.indianafuneralcare.com. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The American Cancer Society (www.theamericancancersociety/DavidKWhite.com).
